Welcome Address

Dear Fellows, Members, Colleagues and Friends

On behalf of The Gambia Chapter of the West African College of Physicians (WACP – The College), I am thrilled to announce the 44th Annual General and Scientific Meeting (AGSM) of The College to be held in Kololi, Greater Banjul Area, The Gambia from the 26th – 30th October 2020.The Gambia Chapter is proud to once again host our colleagues from West Africa, and other postgraduate medical colleges in Africa, Europe and North America.

The theme for the 44th AGSM, “Universal Health Coverage: A right for everyone, everywhere”, with sub-themes “The role of vaccines in universal health coverage”, and “Destigmatising mental health in the sub-region”, are timely. Sustainable Development Goal 3 aspires to ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all, at all ages. It also aims to achieve universal health coverage (UHC), provide access to safe and effective medicines and vaccines for all, while supporting research and development for vaccines as well as expanding access to affordable medicines. As we enter the last decade of the SDGs and begin our countdown to 2030, we cannot overemphasize our role as healthcare professionals and researchers in the implementation of a successful UHC, including healthcare financing, research and development for vaccines and medicines. The repeated occurrence in the region of infections such as Ebola and Lassa fever as well as the emergence of novel infections such as Covid-19 serve to remind us of the urgency of these initiatives. In recent years, mental health has stepped out of the shadows and is increasingly being part of the “conversation”; yet, the stigma of mental health contributes to health disparities and discrimination and continues to permeate all of society, affecting people at all levels. We anticipate that this 44th AGSM will bring together experts, researchers, policy-makers and all other key stakeholders in various fields of UHC, Vaccinology and Mental Health for enhanced collaboration, to advance the thinking, and exchange ideas.

We hereby invite all Fellows and Members of the College, healthcare and public health practitioners, researchers and the global community to join us in sharing ideas, information, science and the prospects for UHC, Vaccines and Mental Health in the West African sub-region and beyond. The 44th AGSM promises to be an interactive and comprehensive platform and will comprise of six (6) streams of oral presentations based on the main theme and sub-themes, including parallel sessions of plenary talks, together with time slots for posters to be shared. There will also be ample opportunity for informal networking, discussion and debate with fellow professionals in the field. We look forward to welcoming you to the Smiling Coast of Africa for this exciting event!
